چکیده

The characteristic dependence of the intensity of transition radiation (TR) on the Lorentz factor g 1⁄4 E=mc of a primary particle is key to a number of practical applications. In particular, one may use TR detectors for energy measurements of heavy cosmic-ray nuclei in a region where alternate techniques are difficult to apply. However, a serious constraint can be the saturation of the TR yield at high g-values. We investigate how the onset of saturation can be pushed to as high a Lorentz factor as possible. We then describe the results of test measurements at CERN, which demonstrate the possibility of practical configurations for measurements over the Lorentz factor range of a few hundred to about 10: r 2004 Elsevier B.V. F eb 2 00 4 Measurements of Compton Scattered Transition Radiation at High Lorentz Factors

X-ray transition radiation can be used to measure the Lorentz factor of relativistic particles. Standard transition radiation detectors (TRDs) typically incorporate thin plastic foil, foam, or fiber radiators and gas-filled x-ray detectors, and are sensitive up to γ ∼ 10. To reach Lorentz factors up to γ ∼ 10, thicker, denser radiators can be used, which consequently produce x-rays of harder en...

Transition Radiation Detectors for Cosmic Rays Near the Knee

Precise observations of the energy spectra and relative abundances of cosmic-ray nuclei require instruments that exhibit individual charge resolution and a calibrated energy response. If energies up to ∼1015 eV are to be covered, the low intensity of the heavier nuclei (Z 3) also mandates detector areas of several square meters. X-ray transition radiation detectors (TRDs) appear to provide the ...

Lorentz angle measurements in irradiated silicon detectors between 77 K and 300

Future experiments are using silicon detectors in a high radiation environment and in high magnetic fields. The radiation tolerance of silicon improves by cooling it to temperatures below 180 K. At low temperatures the mobility increases, which leads to larger deflections of the charge carriers by the Lorentz force. A good knowledge of the Lorentz angle is needed for design and operation of sil...

A NEW MEASUREMENT OF THE INTENSITIES OF THE HEAVY PRIMARY COSMIC-RAY NUCLEI AROUND 1 TeV amu

We describe a new measurement of the intensities of the heavy primary cosmic-ray nuclei O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe from 10 GeV amu 1 to energies beyond 1 TeV amu 1. The measurement was conducted in 1999 during a 1 day test flight of the Transition Radiation Array for Cosmic Energetic Radiation (TRACER), a new cosmic-ray telescope designed for long-duration balloon flights. TRACER uses an array of th...

Conceptual Design and Simulation of Alpha-Beta Detector for Surface Contamination Measurements

The radioactive contamination measurement is essential in nuclear facilities. Monitoring of low level alpha and beta contamination is possible using light detectors high efficiency. Due to the fact that many detectors canchr('39')t simultaneously discriminate alpha, beta and gamma rays; among existing methods, phoswich detectors would be appropriate option to measure different radioactive conta...
